Cambridge University
Hillwalking Club

A club which travels to mountainous regions of the UK for hillwalking at all levels of ability. We run day trips, weekends away and longer holiday trips to areas such as the Lake District, Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, and Scotland. We welcome residents of Cambridge, and staff and students of both universities.

Forthcoming trips

All trips: Trips are open to Club members (sometimes non-members are accepted at the committee's discretion). You will need normal hillwalking equipment (see the Club's Mountain Safety Guidelines); the committee can - and will - refuse to take people on walks whom they feel are inadequately equipped. The club does have some gear for loan - ask the Equipment officer.

Unless otherwise stated, weekend trips leave from Cambridge on Friday afternoons (usually around 5:30pm); day trips early in the morning (around 7am). Longer (vacation) trips generally require members to make their own transport arrangements, arriving on the evening of the first day.

Booking details are given on the email list; this normally involves a sign-up on the Monday morning immediately preceding the trip. You must sign the booking sheet to secure a place, unless you've been exempted by prior arrangement!

Maps specified are Ordnance Survey Landranger (1:50 000) and Explorer (1:25 000) series; Harvey maps are also available for some areas at 1:40 000 or 1:25 000 scale.

Weekend 13 and 14 February 2010
Three Peaks area of the Yorkshire Dales, staying at the Selside Centre in Ribblesdale.
We most recently went to this part of the Dales in June 2008 and February 2007.
Suitable maps include Landranger 98 (Wensleydale & Upper Wharfedale) and Explorer OL2 (Yorkshire Dales - Southern and Western areas).
Weekend 27 and 28 February 2010
The final weekend trip before Easter will be to the village of Boot in Eskdale in the Lake District. We'll be staying in the Eskdale Centre.
We haven't visited this bunkhouse since February 2006 (but take a look at the photos, they're fantastic!) but we visit the Lakes frequently, such as the Halloween trip in October 2009.
Suitable maps include Explorer OL6 (Lake District - South-western area) and Landranger 89 (West Cumbria) and 96 (Barrow-in-Furness & South Lakeland).

Regular socials

Lunches
Lunches during term are on Monday lunchtimes at 1:15pm and cost £2. They are in Peile JCR in Newnham College (marked '1' on their college map (PDF)). Come along to socialise with fellow hillwalkers and have all the baguettes, fillings, crisps, fruit, chocolate and treats that you can eat!
Pub Meets
Pub meets are on Thursday evenings from 9:30pm, in the Castle Inn, on Castle Hill. Upstairs if possible (or outside if it's nice), but occasionally downstairs. All year round (not just term-time). The Castle has an entry in the Cambridge Pub Guide; if you need directions, a map can be obtained from Multimap.

Recent trips

January 2010
The Christmas vacation trip was again to Seathwaite at the head of Borrowdale in the Lake District. The first weekend trip of the new term visited the cosy Pinacle Club hut in Cwm Dyli at the foot of Snowdon.
November 2009
November saw a weekend trip to Dartmoor and a snowy weekend in Snowdonia. In terms of socials, we had formals at Johns and Robinson, the standard end-of-term Christmas Curry, and a Ceilidh to celebrate the club's 21st birthday. No one seems to have any photos from those socials, though...
October 2009
The first day trip of the new year was the usual jaunt to Edale in the Peak District for new members. The end of the month saw the first weekend trip of the new year: the somewhat damp Hallowe'en Trip to Dunmail Raise, near Grasmere, in the Lake District.
July 2009
The traditional summer camping trip to Scotland was to Kinlochleven, in north Argyll. At the end of the month several members attended an Alpine course in Switzerland, and met up with more club members camping in Saas Grund (near Saas Fee) the following week.
