Cambridge University
Hillwalking Club

A club which travels to mountainous regions of the UK for hillwalking at all levels of ability. We run day trips, weekends away and longer holiday trips to areas such as the Lake District, Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, and Scotland. We welcome residents of Cambridge, and staff and students of both universities.

Forthcoming trips

All trips: Trips are open to Club members (sometimes non-members are accepted at the committee's discretion). You will need normal hillwalking equipment (see the Club's Mountain Safety Guidelines); the committee can - and will - refuse to take people on walks whom they feel are inadequately equipped. The club does have some gear for loan - ask the Equipment officer.

Unless otherwise stated, weekend trips leave from Cambridge on Friday afternoons (usually around 5:30pm); day trips early in the morning (around 7am). Longer (vacation) trips generally require members to make their own transport arrangements, arriving on the evening of the first day.

Booking details are given on the email list; this normally involves a sign-up on the Monday morning immediately preceding the trip. You must sign the booking sheet to secure a place, unless you've been exempted by prior arrangement!

Maps specified are Ordnance Survey Landranger (1:50 000) and Explorer (1:25 000) series; Harvey maps are also available for some areas at 1:40 000 or 1:25 000 scale.

Weekend 28 and 29 November 2009
Yr Hafod bunkhouse by Idwal Cottage in the Ogwen Valley area of Snowdonia. There's easy access to all the high peaks of the area - the Glyderau ridge (including Tryfan, Y Garn and Elidir Fawr), and the Carneddau (including Pen yr Ole Wen) are accessible direct from the bunkhouse; Moel Siabod and Snowdon are a short drive away. It's a good bunkhouse for socialising in after walking; a good job as it's a long way from the pub!
We've previously visited this area in October 2008 and this bunkhouse in November 2007.
Appropriate maps are Landranger 115 (Snowdon) and Explorer OL17 (Snowdonia - Snowdon and Conwy Valley areas).
Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 January 2010
The annual post-New-Year trip to the Lakes will once again be going to Seathwaite, at the head of Borrowdale. This is very close to the highest fells of the Lake District: Sca Fell, Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Great End and so on are all within easy reach, and slightly further afield is the full range of Central and North-Western Fells, including the secluded valley of Ennerdale and picturesque Derwent Water.

Other events

Saturday 21 November 2009
We're having a Ceilidh to celebrate the club's 21st birthday. Tickets will be available on the door (sorry I forgot to put this event on the website earlier) for £5. A Ceilidh is a group dancing fest, with a caller to tell us all exactly what to do, so no experience is required! It should be a lot of fun. The Ceilidh is at the "Forum" in Jesus College - Matthew has helpfully provided a map (switch it to "Satellite View").
Wednesday 25 November 2009
We celebrate the end of term with the most traditional of british methods - by going out for a curry. We're going to India House near Newnham on the 25th November. Contact Caroline (ch428) to reserve your place - she's planning to confirm numbers on the 21st Nov.

Regular socials

Lunches
Lunches during term are on Monday lunchtimes at 1:15pm and cost £1.50. They are in Peile JCR in Newnham College (marked '1' on their college map (PDF)).
Pub Meets
Pub meets are on Thursday evenings from 9:30pm, in the Castle Inn, on Castle Hill. Upstairs if possible (or outside if it's nice), but occasionally downstairs. All year round (not just term-time). The Castle has an entry in the Cambridge Pub Guide; if you need directions, a map can be obtained from Multimap.

Recent trips

July 2009
The traditional summer camping trip to Scotland was to Kinlochleven, in north Argyll. At the end of the month several members attended an Alpine course in Switzerland, and met up with more club members camping in Saas Grund (near Saas Fee) the following week.
June 2009
The final trip of term time was to Glenridding in the Lake District. Some of those with no pressing need to return to Cambridge extended the trip into the following week at a nearby campsite.
May 2009
The dreaded exam term was kicked off with a weekend trip to Southern Snowdonia, near Cadair Idris. A day trip to Bakewell in the peak district followed [I can't find any photos, but I remember people reporting back that it was a wet one!].
March 2009
The Easter vacation trip visited the cosy hut owned by the Pinnacle Club, right by the foot of Snowdon.
February 2009
A snowy weekend in Snowdonia was followed by the celebration of the Club's 20th anniversary at High Close YHA, Langdale.
