Cambridge University
Hillwalking Club

A club which travels to mountainous regions of the UK for hillwalking at all levels of ability. We run day trips, weekends away and longer holiday trips to areas such as the Lake District, Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, and Scotland. We welcome residents of Cambridge, and staff and students of both universities.

Forthcoming trips

All trips: Trips are open to Club members (sometimes non-members are accepted at the committee's discretion). You will need normal hillwalking equipment (see the Club's Mountain Safety Guidelines); the committee can - and will - refuse to take people on walks whom they feel are inadequately equipped. The club does have some gear for loan - ask the Equipment officer.

Unless otherwise stated, weekend trips leave from Cambridge on Friday afternoons (usually around 5 or 6 o'clock); day trips very early in the morning (6 or 7 o'clock). Longer (vacation) trips generally require members to make their own transport arrangements, arriving on the evening of the first day.

Booking details are given on the email list; this normally involves a sign-up on the Monday morning immediately preceding the trip. You must sign the booking sheet to secure a place, unless you've been exempted by prior arrangement!

Maps specified are Ordnance Survey Landranger (1:50 000) and Explorer (1:25 000) series; Harvey maps are also available for some areas at 1:40 000 or 1:25 000 scale.

Saturday 4 to Saturday 11 July 2009
Summer trip to Kinlochleven, in the western Highlands of Scotland.
As usual for the summer trip, we'll be camping, and members are expected to make their own way there (lift shares will almost certainly be possible). Come and stay for as much or as little as you like, for £5 per night camp-site fee.
We've never stayed at Kinlochleven before, but we last went to nearby Glen Coe in July 2005.
Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 January 2010
The annual post-New-Year trip to the Lakes will once again be going to Seathwaite, at the head of Borrowdale. This is very close to the highest fells of the Lake District: Sca Fell, Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Great End and so on are all within easy reach, and slightly further afield is the full range of Central and North-Western Fells, including the secluded valley of Ennerdale and picturesque Derwent Water.

Regular socials

Lunches
Lunches during term are on Wednesday lunchtimes at 1:15pm and cost £1.50. They are in Peile JCR in Newnham College (marked '1' on their college map).
Pub Meets
Pub meets are on Thursday evenings from 9:30pm, in the Castle Inn, on Castle Hill. Upstairs if possible (or outside if it's nice), but occasionally downstairs. All year round (not just term-time). The Castle has an entry in the Cambridge Pub Guide; if you need directions, a map can be obtained from Multimap.

Recent trips

January 2009
Again, we went to Seathwaite, in Borrowdale, for the New Year trip. Another snowy trip followed, to Teesdale.
November 2008
Our first snow of the winter was found in Snowdonia. In mid-November, we had a damp weekend based at Ystradfellte, in the Brecon Beacons, then a week later, a much drier trip to the Coniston Fells in the southern Lake District.
October 2008
As always, the new academic year began with a day-trip to Edale.
