Lent Newsletter 2

Hi everyone,

I hope you've all been enjoying the beautiful frosty weather today - perhaps the start of real winter, at last! If it's put you in the mood for getting into the good old outdoors, there are plenty of exciting CUHWC events coming up, from our Lent day trip to the AGM to two excellent formals.

Shropshire Day Trip, Sunday 3rd February

For this term's day trip, we'll be heading west for a day of hillwalking in the beautiful Shropshire Hills: an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with some amazing quartzite tors in the Stiperstones area, plenty of hilly topography, and the Welsh border only a stone's throw away. If you have Saturday lectures and can't make it to weekend trips, this is the perfect short excursion to get a blast of hills.

Sign up here, stating your name, e-mail, and the names and e-mail addresses of up to 2 people with whom you'd like to go (optional). Places will be assigned at random, with either all or none of the people you name getting a place (with the same likelihood as if you applied alone). If you get a place and drop out, you'll be less likely to get a place on future trips, and if we're unable to find a replacement you'll have to pay for your place (see our drop out policy). The trip fee is £20.

If you have any questions about kit, check the website for our kit list and list of what you can borrow. If that doesn't help then e-mail our Safety and Equipment Officer, Chris. For any general questions, there's basic trip information on our website. If that doesn't help, feel free to email

Formals galore!

Our excellent social secretaries have organised two cracking formals in the next few weeks to whet your hillwalking appetite, the first of which is now available for signup.

Pembroke Formal, Thursday 31st January

Join us for our first CUHWC formal of 2019, at the beautiful Pembroke College, for what is sure to be an evening of good food and even better company, as ever. The cost of the delicious 3-course meal is £15 - sign up on the webform here. Please note that if you get a place and drop out, you'll still need to pay the full price unless we can find a replacement - this is to protect our members who have booked the tickets from their own pockets.

Gonville and Caius Formal, Monday 4th February

For the first time in recent memory, CUHWC will be dining at Gonville and Caius College for our second formal of the term. Caius formals are somewhat notorious - now is your chance to experience one for real, for a bargain price of £6, and in the excellent company of your fellow hillwalkers. Sign up is not yet open, but will be soon - until then, be sure to keep the date free.

If you have any questions about either formal, feel free to drop an email to Mary and Simon at

Venue is TBC but if you're interested in applying to be on next year's committee, would like to vote, or just want to here more about the nitty-gritty of the club's fascinating internal workings over the past year, then put the date in your diary.

More detailed information about what each role entails is available here. If you're interested in applying for any of the above positions, feel free to chat to any of us at the pub, or email us - email addresses for all committee members can be found here. Whether you are new to CUHWC or are part of the furniture, we'd love to hear from you!

30th Anniversary Weekend Trip, 15th-17th February

A few spaces have recently become available on the 30th anniversary weekend trip to Langdale Youth Hostel in the Lake District. This is CUHWC on steroids: a one-off trip to one of the most beautiful parts of the Lakes, with a 3-course dinner on Saturday night attended by around 100 hillwalkers past and present, to celebrate 30 years of the best outdoors society in Cambridge! If you missed the chance to sign up earlier, this is the last opportunity to come on what is sure to be an unforgettable weekend.

The adult tickets are £120 (drinking) or £110 (non-drinking) - the cost includes two nights' accommodation, 3 course meal, copious amounts of drink and biscuits, a journal, and of course great company.
