Lent Newsletter 2

Hi all

Although term has only just started, we're already thinking about the next vacation because we have not one but two trips this time! Sign up is now open for both trips; details below.

  1. Glencoe Vacation Trip, Glencoe Independent Hostel, 21st - 27th March
  2. Cwm Dyli Vacation Trip, Emily Kelly Hut, 6th - 11th April

Glencoe Independent Hostel, Glencoe, South Western Scottish Highlands

We're really excited to announce our trip to Glencoe. It's a beautiful part of the UK that is just impossible to get to for weekend trips (and you couldn't do the area justice in two day walks anyway). These are serious mountains (with stunning views if you get a clear day) so if you want to come you should be comfortable with long, demanding days in big hills. You don't need to be a mountaineering expert to come though, nor do you need to have spent every summer in Scotland since you were born; to get an idea of the sort of walks we might do take a look at this website (which is an amazing resource for any hillwalking trip to Scotland).

We have 16 places booked in the Glencoe Independent Hostel bunkhouse from the 21st to 27th March. Unlike our other vacation trips, this is not a pay-per-night trip. The cost is £66, including tea, milk and biscuits.

As we're going in March, there is the possibility of winter conditions so we'll be gauging interest in a winter skills course for the Friday and Saturday. We'll confirm and book this closer to the time to make sure there is enough snow on the ground. If there is winter conditions, you'll also need to have winter walking boots (at least B1), an ice axe, and crampons if you want to do anything above the snowline, although the club has plenty of axes and some crampons to lend out, and we can try and recommend a hire company for boots.

As normal with our vacation trips, you'll have to arrange your own travel to and from Scotland. Glasgow is easy enough to reach by rail from most of the UK; there is then a Citylink bus to Glencoe village, a short walk from the bunkhouse. If there is anyone who plans to drive, it would be a big help to have a car or two on the trip, but it is a long way from Cambridge. When we confirm places we'll send out the wiki for organising transport.

We're running a random ballot sign up for this trip. If you'd like to come, fill in this webform stating your name, e-mail and (if you'd like) the names and e-mail addresses of up to 2 people with whom you'd like to go. Places will be assigned after the sign-up deadline, with either all or none of the people you name getting a place (with the same likelihood as if you applied alone). Sign up closes at 18:00 on Sunday 4th February. We'll then send an email to confirm whether you have a place or if you're on the waiting list.

Emily Kelly Hut, Cwm Dyli, Snowdonia

Our more traditional Easter vacation trip is to the Pinnacle Club's Emily Kelly Hut in Cwm Dyli from the 6th - 11th April. It's at the foot of Snowdon and not far from the Glyders so there is ample walking to be done! This is a pay-per-night trip, with the cost per night at £11.

Again, you'll have to arrange your own transport to and from the hut - there is a wiki on the club website for organising lifts and public transport. The hut is quite difficult to get to by public transport, so drivers who'd be happy to go via places with train stations (Bangor, Wrexham, Shrewsbury, Chester etc.) would be much appreciated!

We have loads of places on this trip - the hut has 22 beds - so we're running sign up for this trip as first come, first served. We'll confirm your place and ask you to pay for the number of nights you're staying for after you've signed up and send the trip email with more details closer to the time. If you'd like to come, please fill in the webform with your arrival and departure dates.

If you've not come on one of our vacation trips before I'd really recommend it - it's really nice to have multiple days to explore an area, and the bunkhouse atmosphere is great! The photos from our winter vacation trip to Coniston are on the club facebook group - we can't guarantee good weather again but we can promise good walks and excellent company!

See you all in the pub or the hills soon!

Best wishes
