Borrowdale, May 1996

I wasn't feeling too optimistic for this one. Especially after hearing the weather forecast on Radio 1 (and the Daily Express). Furthermore, myself and the president were suffering a mini work crisis that required Keith to take his Hamiltonian equations for company. (Spin operators; not for company - KRS)

The Borrowdale Y.H. is superb, but we weren't prepared for the hordes of 9-year-olds that appeared! The teachers kept us awake until 1am and then the kiddies were let loose to terrorise us from 6:30am. I was hoping they would get dressed and take their noise downstairs, but no such luck as they'd found that the light cord in the toilet opposite made an interesting sound.

Saturday

Quite nice weather actually. Basically everyone went round the local peaks, taking in Gable, Great End and Glaramara. Mike and Dave (Ruddick) went to Skiddaw instead. I was a little pissed off while Toby & Keith led a group on an ambitious (?-ed.) scramble detour. This was because I missed the chance to bag Scafell Pike, which was only another 60m climb from Great End.

Evening: Celebrated my birthday with a few bears (Bears? I didn't see them in the pub - TMS), but missed out on the Eurovision Song Contest, 'cos the TV was switched off. Anyway, I gather that Ireland won again, so it wouldn't have been worth seeing.

Sunday

Threat of rain sent us north to Blencathra; the logic being that a misty day was ideal for taking in the views from one of the best Lakeland peaks. Toby led (yet another) scramble - up Sharp Edge. Meanwhile, Robin continued to bag tea shops in Keswick.

Later: Toby directs us to the "best fish and chip shop in Yorkshire"; argument then ensues as to its relative merits compared to Harry Ramsden's.

Can't remember much. Ask Steve if you want an account of the teacher's conversation with the kids.
