Walking and climbing archives
Please note: the resources listed here are outside our control, so links will occasionally be
inoperative, despite regular checks. Please help by reporting broken links to the webmaster.
Any additions would also be greatly appreciated.
Many of these are dedicated to climbing, rather than hillwalking (but walking is gradually
becoming better-represented).
- Indexes
- Climbing resources
- The UK Climbing Archive is quite large, and well run
(though somewhat heavy on graphics).
- Usenet
- The
uk.rec.walking newsgroup is the main place
for hillwalking-related discussion. For serious winter activity (or rock-climbing - but you
shouldn't admit to that!), the uk.rec.climbing newsgroup may be more appropriate. The rec.backcountry newsgroup has a very strong North
American bias, but may be useful.
- Walking guides
- Mike Edwards has a guide to walks in the
mountains of Britain and Ireland, with pictures.
- John Dawson's Lake District Walks are described in outline (giving distances
covered and heights ascended) with detailed information on 37 routes, and including over 150
photographs.
- Beverly Mercer's walks from north Glasgow (and a
few other areas) are well-presented, with nice photos.
- Joanne Winters wrote the Internet Guide
to Scotland, which contains a wealth of information.
- Equipment guides
- Pete Clinch's Gear Pages contain
collected wisdom from Usenet on such topics as walking poles, rucksacks, and down equipment.
- Pictures
- In addition to the club photo album, some
club members have photos on the Web - notably
- Some of the Duffers who have photo albums include
- Fanzines
- If you walk in Scotland, The Angry Corrie
is a must-read (it's available on dead trees in some Scottish gear shops or by post), or for a more
international approach, Outside Online
may interest you.
- Other amusements
- Fantasy Mountaineering should lighten your
day...
- Mountain data
- If you're a sad-case doing the Munros, the Corbetts, the Donalds, the Grahams, ..., you will be
interested in the University of Liverpool mountain database.
- I'm not sure if this is the right category, but Ann Bowker is mad about mountains - in particular, she is the
Skiddaw Fan Club.
- Snow conditions
- The Scottish Avalanche Information Service is very useful if
you're going to the Highlands. It has up-to-date reports on snow/ice conditions and avalanche
risk assessments, also posted to
uk.rec.climbing on Usenet. [does this count as
a "Weather" resource? -TMS].
- Access information
- Not (yet) on the Net, there is stalking information available by telephone during the stalking season.
- The current (1996) edition of Heading for the Scottish Hills contains essential
information for anyone venturing on to the Scottish hills, but is sadly out of print and unlikely
to be re-issued.
- The Ministry of Defence now has information on Access on the
Defence Estates.
