Equipment
Please note: the resources listed here are outside our control, so links will occasionally be
inoperative, despite regular checks. Please help by reporting broken links to the webmaster. Any
additions would also be greatly appreciated.
This isn't supposed to be an exhaustive list - just those sites suggested by members. And it's
not to be considered an endorsement of any of them.
- Guides to Equipment and Technique
- WalkingAndHiking offer advice on safe trekking,
rambling and strolling; particularly suited to the beginner.
- Pete Clinch's Gear Pages contain
collected wisdom from Usenet on such topics as walking poles, rucksacks, and down equipment.
- Manchester University Hiking Club used to have a
guide to Outdoor Gear Factory Shops and other places to get bargains; if it's rediscovered,
please email
the webmaster.
- Books & maps
- Of course, all the usual Cambridge bookshops have plenty of books on hills, including Ordnance Survey or Harvey maps).
- A larger set is available from the James Thin bookshop in
Edinburgh (they accept orders by WWW, email, phone, fax, or post - phew! - if you don't
fancy going that far from Cambridge).
- Mail Order
- If you can't find what you want in Open Air (Green Street, 10% off to members), you could order
from Cotswold or Field & Trek. The latter now have a shop in Cambridge, near the Grafton Centre.
- Gear repairs
- Feet First repair walking boots and rock shoes.
Order form online, but you cant (yet!) email your boots to them. ;-)
- Lancashire Sports Repairs provide a complete footwear care
service, and also mend rucksacks.
- Shoecare offer a comprehensive repair service, though sadly
their web site lacks the usual usability features.
