Easter Term Bulletin 4
Hello Hillwalkers,
I hope everyone who came to the garden party and overnight punting yesterday enjoyed themselves - a big thank you to the Social Secretaries for all the planning, flawless execution and superb cake! Hill-wise, reports and photo links from the Roaches and Patterdale trips should be on the Trip Book section of the website soon - and keep an eye out for details of next year's trips, which will be added shortly.
- Graduating or leaving Cambridge? Keep in touch with the club!
- Summer socials and the discuss list
- Borrowing club kit
- Outdoor summer jobs with RAW Adventure Camps
1. Graduating or leaving Cambridge? Keep in touch with the club!
If you're losing your university email address but want to continue to be subscribed to this list, you can email our Membership Secretary, Kirsty (kb419), with your old and new email addresses. We recommend that you get a cantab.net address and use that - not essential, but it makes things easier as you don't have to keep telling everyone new email addresses as you move around.
If you're leaving Cambridge, please consider joining our active alumni organisation, the Old Duffers. They have an open mailing list (any member can post), which allows ex-members of CUHWC to stay in touch to organise informal walking trips, house parties, and other events. It will also be used to advertise more official events such as joint club-duffer trips. If you want to be on this mailing list, contact the Old Duffers' list manager stating which years you were a member. Recent graduates are very welcome, as are those who have been out of touch for years!
2. Summer socials and the discuss list
The club maintains a critical mass in Cambridge during the summer, and pub meets continue on Thursday evenings throughout the vacation. By default, these are at the Castle Inn on Castle Street from 2130 as usual; however, people often suggest moving to a different location and/or meeting earlier for food. We'll attempt to post the location on the front page of the website each week, but arrangements are often finalised quite late - the most reliable way to find out about these changes is to join the discuss list. This is an informal mailing list that any subscriber can post to, and is often used to arrange ad-hoc social events and unofficial trips as well as acting as a forum on a wide range of topics (not all of them hillwalking-related!) It can be quite high-traffic, but you can add and remove yourself at any time on this page - and it's excellent for relieving boredom over the summer!
3. Borrowing club kit
All club kit is available for members to borrow over the summer vacation for official, unofficial and entirely independent activities (on a first-come, first-served basis). A list of items available to borrow can be found here or requested from the Safety Officer (Joe, jlh79). If you need something for the Scotland trip, it will be brought to Glen Shiel for you; otherwise, you'll need to arrange to pick it up at the pub or another mutually convenient time and place - please email Joe with your requirements as soon as possible.
4. Outdoor summer jobs with RAW Adventure Camps
If you've found yourself jobless over the summer and fancy working outside with kids, you might take a look at RAW Adventure Camps, who are running 20 camps throughout the southeast of England. Staff are needed to lead activities such as tracking and navigation, shelter building, wilderness first aid and archery, and there are also management opportunities. Lots more information at www.rawadventurecamps.co.uk, or email me for more details.
There'll be another email at some point over the summer reminding you about the Scotland trip (Glen Shiel, 18-26 September - see the website and last bulletin for details) and how to sign up for it if you haven't already, but apart from that, it'll be all quiet on the main list - I'm off to spend a couple of months outside! Enjoy the rest of May Week, and have a great summer.
Cheers,
Jo President, CUHWC St John's College
