IntroductionCUHWC was formed to fill the gap between the Rambling and Mountaineering Clubs; to get out of Cambridge to Britain's mountainous areas while offering a range of walks of differing standards, from gentler hillwalking to more challenging scrambling.
We organise three or four trips in each of the Michaelmas and Lent terms - generally two or three weekend trips and a day trip - and one or two in the Easter term. Longer outings take place in each vacation. We normally go to the Lake District, Snowdonia, Peak District and Pennines, with less regular visits to other hilly areas.
The equipment needed is a pair of sturdy walking boots, a rucksack, a decent set of waterproofs and warm clothing as we walk all year round. There is more on this in our Fell and Mountain Guidelines. The club has some equipment to lend to members, such as maps and compasses.
Day trips generally leave early in the morning (before sunrise, even!) to get the travelling over. Normally, the Peak District is the furthest we can get to for a day. About 20-30 people take part, splitting into four or five smaller groups doing different walks; all with at least one experienced member of the club. This provides an opportunity for those with less experience to learn skills such as map reading and compass work, (although the club can only advise and not instruct). A day trip will normally cost in the region of £10-15.
For term-time weekend trips, transport is generally by minibus leaving Friday afternoon and returning Sunday evening. This allows us to have two full days of walking. Accommodation is usually in bunkhouses or youth hostels, with members making their own arrangements for food. The cost of these trips is usually £30-35.
Vacation trips are longer, staying in bunkhouses or camping. This means we can go further afield, particularly to Scotland.
