All trips: Trips are open to Club members (sometimes non-members are accepted at
the committee's discretion). You will need normal hillwalking equipment (see the Club's Mountain Safety Guidelines); the committee can - and
will - refuse to take people on walks whom they feel are inadequately equipped. The club does
have some gear for loan - ask the Equipment officer.
Unless otherwise stated, weekend trips leave from Cambridge on Friday afternoons (usually around
5 or 6 o'clock); day trips very early in the morning (6 or 7 o'clock). Longer (vacation) trips
generally require members to make their own transport arrangements, arriving on the evening of the
first day.
Booking details are given on the email list; this normally involves a sign-up on the Monday morning
immediately preceding the trip. You must sign the booking sheet to secure a place,
unless you've been exempted by prior arrangement!
Maps specified are Ordnance Survey Landranger (1:50 000) and Explorer (1:25 000) series; Harvey maps are also available for some areas at 1:40 000 or
1:25 000 scale.
- Sunday 29 June to Sunday 6 July 2008
- Summer trip to Glen Shiel, in the western Highlands
of Scotland.
- As usual for the summer trip, we'll be camping, and members are expected to make their own way
there (lift shares will almost certainly be possible). Come and stay for as much or as little
as you like.
- Maps for Glen Shiel: Landranger 33 (Loch Alsh, Glen Shiel & surrounding area)
is probably the best buy; also consider Explorer 414 (Glen Shiel & Kintail
Forest). The SMC Hillwalkers' Guide for Glen Shiel is The Northwest Highlands by
Broadhead, Keith & Maden (2004). ISBN
0-907521-81-9, £22.
- Skye is easily reachable from Glen Shiel, and the bridge is now free, so consider maps/guides of
the Cuillin if you think you might make a trip there.
- We have visited Glen Shiel most recently in June 2006 and July 2005.
- Useful Web resource:
- Sunday 19 October 2008
- Edale in the Peak District of England. The traditional day trip
to the Peak District for new members (and old!). Sign up at the Squash; after that, remaining
places may be bagged by email.
- We've previously visited this area in October 2005 and October 2006. The
popular walks include Kinder Scout, the Edale skyline, and various tea-shops & pubs.
- Useful maps: Explorer OL1 (The Peak District - Dark Peak area) or Landranger 110
(Sheffield & Huddersfield area).
- Weekend 1 and 2 November 2008
- Caseg Fraith bunkhouse, near Capel Curig in Snowdonia. There's
easy access to all the high peaks of the area including Tryfan/Glyderau, the Carneddau, Moel
Siabod, and Snowdon itself. It's a long way from the pub, so worth bringing our own for a cosy
social in the bunkhouse.
- We've previously visited this bunkhouse in November 2004 and October 2005.
- Appropriate maps are Landranger 115 (Snowdon) and Explorer OL17 (Snowdonia -
Snowdon and Conwy Valley areas).
- Weekend 15 and 16 November 2008
- Brecon Beacons, in South Wales. We're staying in the Croydon Caving Club bunkhouse at Godre
Pentre in Ystradfellte - handy for some very good waterfall
walks. The Beacons are well worth a visit: the walking includes Pen-y-Fan and the other
summits of the Beacons proper; the Black Mountain and the Black Mountains (yes, they are two
different places!).
- Suitable maps are Landranger 160 (Brecon Beacons) or Explorer OL12 (Brecon
Beacons - National Park Western & Central areas) or OL13 (Brecon Beacons - National
Park Eastern area).
- Weekend 22 and 23 November 2008
- Torver, near Coniston in the Lake District. We'll be staying in
Trannearth climbing hut (about 1km walk from the road). Popular walks in this area include the
Coniston hills - the Old Man, Dow Crag and Wetherlam. Langdale is also within easy reach for
Crinkle Crags, Bow Fell and the Langdale Pikes.
- Recent visits to this area include October 2004 and March 2007.
- Useful maps include Explorer OL6 (Lake District SW) and OL7 (Lake District
SE); Landranger 96 (Barrow-in-Furness) and 89 (West Cumbria)
or 90 (Penrith, Keswick and Ambleside).
